Weather was pretty bad. Actually it was raining cats and dogs :-( Nevertheless we did not care and actually we did not travel directly to Wellington, but had a detour to see THE WHITE KIWI at Mount Bruce.
Seeing white tiny Kiwi baby getting feeded, we rode over a big mountain pass! Arriving in Wellington we stopped directly at the Weta Cave. This is a museum which a Lord of the rings fanatic has to visit. So Flora was excieted and nervous. This was beside Hobbit Tour her absolut must to visit.
I would say there is a quite alikeness between Gollum and me, isn´t ist?! :-) From Weta Caves we drove Shelly Bay. It's an awesome road, but fucking rainy and windy weather reduced happiness :-/
After quick checkin in Comfort Quality Hotel we drove to supermarket to get all stuff for next days. By the way, this were almost the first time, I saw a few People in a hurry cause of New Years Eve. Back to hotel, after an extensive washing session we prepeared for "silvester".
Believe or not, but Newzealander celebrate in a quite a differnent way as European does! It was a pitty that Celebration at the docks were canceled, and the partynight dues till 1:00am. There was no pyrotechnics at all, and those few rockets we saw were launched by tourists :-)
Hoping for a slightly better weather for our sightseeing tour next day to come...
But first we celebrate NEW YEARS EVE...!!!

... adventure River Road
Early morning after a great continental breakfast with an Australian couple, we startet our trip to Wanganui. Everybody recommended to go ahead the beautiful River Road.
So we proceed that way - and hell ... this was real fun and adventure at all. The road ends in a crushed rock road along the stylisch river. 65km cruising, stopping, taking pictures - undescribeable!!!
Flora sometimes proclaimed an "uiuiui" - but this didn´t belong to the beauty of landscape but of condition of road - and maybe to my behavings drifting the curves :-)
By the way we passed "Athen" and "Jerusalem" - U think WTF?!
Well - get the picture :-)
I have to say - I LIKE IT :-D
Have a look how nice the trip to Wanganui was...
Finally we arrived Wanganui and check in in Kingsgate Hotel.

cave rafting! WTF?! awesome!!
From Rotorua we drove early morning directly to Waitomo to get prepared at the B&B Somersal for the next adventure - Cave Rafting - hell im excited!!
John and Jenny (hosts) at B&B are a so warmhearted and lovely aged couple!
After short teabreak we drove to the caves of Waitomo. After a ride from 35 minutes we arrived for next rafting session starting at 3:00pm.
Out of casual street wear straight into a nepren swim suit with an wonderful blue egghelmet protecting head, we were ready to "takeoff". After a short introduction by two hyped up guides and armed with tubes we entered the caves through a tiny little whole in the middle of nowhere.
It was sooo awesome to ride, jump, climb, swim and drift through the caves with partly lights switched on or off. On the way back to motel, we had a stop for dinner at Huhu. Pushed but tiered and happy we fall soon asleep.
Next stop Wanganui - a long distance to go along Wanganui River Road should be awesome..
SO we´ll give it a try :-)

shopping experience
From preparing ourselves at Emeral Spa, we started our exploration of a big supermarket named “countdown”. Man - I was overdone by all the choice of similar goods by different producers. Austria is a really small market indeed. A shelf at least 20meters long with just chips. And I never have seen so many different types of toilet paper J I guess we spent at least 1 hour at the supermarket. So this is not just rushing into a supermarket to collect all necessary items - NO THIS is a really exploration which took time!
And I found the “mother” of all energy drinks in world:-)

Hobbit tour
We are thankful having NO jetlag at all. Being on our feet for at least 34hours, and having short power napping at the plane, we are fit and ready to explore New Zealands hotspots.
So we got up and left motel by 9:00am. Hobbit tour started at 9:50am, so we had enough time to get there.
Because we had to sign, not to post pictures and text at face book or similar, the picture show will be given at home for private J Flora, a really lord of the ring fanatic was quite happy being there! After taking part in the hobbit tour and also in a sheep shearing show, we had a coffee and left to the living thermal village (Whakarewarewa) in Rotorua. On the way there, Flora collected first driving experience on the roads of Kiwi-land J. Arriving Whakarewarewa (I could not pronounce the words correctly, so how could I remember all these places for future) at 14:00pm we had a long walk during the national park with places full of hot water. Those friends who still know the smell of Glanzstoff in St Pölten, I have to say … "Glanzstoffcity" is right here. In the whole city u can smell the sulfur. But after hours u get used to this lovely taste of smell ;-) Although it was cloudy Flora created a new stylish type of red skin. After a traditionel HAKA show we had the chance to get some awesome pics with the actors :-D
So we left the therminal village at about 16:30pm to check in at Emeral Spa Motel.

- Very polite owner.
- Each room has same style
- Smaller bathroom but, the whirlpool is IN the bedroom. And it works well! ;-)
- Kitchen just has an microwave and a sink
- Toilet and Bath including shower in one
- WLAN weak and 50MB for 5NZD available

final destination Auckland
After short 58 minutes we reached our final destination Auckland at 12:30 pm. Another security check, followed by getting permission for 3 months stay. Passing declaration and final secure check of baggage content, we left airport. Well, I have to say Kiwis are really likeable, because the helped us by getting to Ace Rental Car. This car service is not directly at the airport, so we had to call a free number to inform them to handle our transit to their office.
At the Ace Rental office the friendly woman managed an upgrade at the ferry from Wellington to Picton, because we do have same car all time. After a short checkout round the white Nissan, we stowed our luggage and prepared for the first run at the street. I fixed my GPS at the front window (updated with newest roadmap of New Zealand), and off we go at 14:00pm.
My experiences?
… first I tried to grap the seatbelt from the wrong side…
… second, my right hand crashed into door, to set gear…
… third, we left park area and I drove first 100m on the wrong side …
… fourth, trying to set the blinker ended in using the fucking windscreen wiper …
… fifth, I tried to rest my left arm on the imaginary door … jep! U have to rest the right arm - WTF?! :-)
… turning left, is easier as turning right …
Finally we arrived at 15pm our first hotspot the Hunua Falls at. This is pretty waterfall, and locals use this place to swim and relax. We spent time for realizing, that we are actually NOW in New Zealand!
At 18:00pm we arrived Matamata - also known as Hobbiton. After do checkin at Broadway Motel, we explored the supermarket. Hell, there are so many different items and goods … shopping becomes an extraordinary adventure. Back to motel, we soon fall asleep.

stopover Christchurch
Air New Zealand is really different to all other flightcompanies I´m already used to. It starts with an really funny security video, in which famous All Black stars introduce security hints. Stewards have no hurry in serving, but in case, they are really really polite and helpful.
Arriving Christchurch we left plane, passed a gateway decorated in jungle style with audiosurroundings and the typical smell of forrest. Another security check followed and after one hour we entered same airplane to set over to Auckland. At least 30 hours travel time is really exhausting and hard. BUT its worth breathing New Zealands air :-)

stopover Narita/Tokyo
Our start was not that way we have expected, because we did not get seats at the window but right in the middle of the plane. Fucked up, we spent time in gaming, watching movies and trying to get some sleep. Indeed, it was a really quite flight to Tokyo/Narita, because Japanese do not speak loud. Instead they are really calm and polite. Finally arriving Japan we decided to leave the airport to explore some famous hotspots of Narita. First we were unsure to proceed in, because we got different answers - from “Yes u can!”, “Yes u can be using a visa“, up to “No u can´t leave transitzone“
Nevertheless it was the best idea believing in Obamas way to declare “YES WE CAN”. So we left transitzone on Terminal 1 at 8:20 am, took first bus to Terminal 2 and actually used there an ATM to get some cash. Conclusion at the ATM? A 10,000 Yen note looks similar to an US Dollar note. And there is an firebird on the backside. Those who know me well, understand the big smile on my face! ;-) By the way a 100 Yen are 1 Euro in exchange.
Pockets full of money we entered a hop on hop off retro bus directly at the Terminal 2 at 9:30 am. We decided to explore the shopping mall and the temple at next 6 hours to come. Lessons learnd pretty soon,, japanese people do not understand english, nor they speak. BUT they are always friendly laughing at u and nodding their heads :-)
At the hop on/off bus, two Aussies gave us a helping hand, because the bus driver could not exchange the tickets. So the Australian guys paid our tickets - backpacking friends forever :-D (by the way, a day ticket costs 500 Yen per person).
First stop at the AEON mall Narita, we got flashed by all these unreadable signs and prices. All items and goods which were presented and shown at the shops were blinking and flashing in all fabulous colours. Japanese like it really … hmm .. let say it this way - they life in an other world as European does :-D And of course there was a great game area at the mall, which drove me crazy. All mixed noise seemed coming out of hell… As an European u felt lost in an other dimension. aja... dimensions... pissoires are so low beneath the earth, that u have to watch out not wet your knees :-))
After paying off my scores to the Aussies we shopped at the Hard Rock Café and then went on to the Naritasan monzen (Shinshoji Temple).
Lucky man we are leaving airport. Area, spirit and park surrounding the temple are so indescribable beautiful. U have to experience it on your own!
We decided to return earlier to the airport, to rearrange the seats of the next flight to Auckland, because our booked seats were not each other. Well, .. same Japanese have not still learned english during our visit. An the way back to airport we missed the bus, cause we waited at wrong bus station. Another 1 hour to head on at this lovely place, we climbed up a small street and explored a few small shops along the way.
Actually back to airport, the next failure popped up. By arranging new seats at Air New Zealand, the friendly lady at the counter infored us of another stopover in Christchurch for at least an hour. This wasn´t planned this way- Positiv fact, we got seats each other at the window…
...off we go to Christchurch
(more information will follow - WLAN sucks at hotels so far)

off we go
Our special thanks goes to our 2 personal "cabdrivers" ...
... for being driven by dad to Anikos flat.
... and also a big thanx to Aniko for taking Flora and me to Vienna airport.
After an emotional farewell, we have already passed the security checks.
Hells bells, weeks ago we began counting days till takeoff and now we are waiting to start boarding...
Next 34 hours we are on the way to New Zealand - so to speak our travel-marathon starts right now. Estimated arrival in Auckland is on 27th of December at 12 AM. But first we will have a "more or less short" stopover in Tokyo (Narita) for at least 10 hours. Maybe there will be a chance to leave the airport to get some experiences of Tokyo?! This would be really great!
YIPPIAJEAH... boarding singal flashes ... off we go!

last checks
YEAH ... final countdown - 3 days to takeoff
The money is really funny. It feels like plastic toy money :-)
And don´t care about the lunette. It´s not a bug, it´s a FEATURE - a saftey feature!
You are asking for any problems by dealing with the lagguage?!
No! Hey,! Come on! It´s all easy-cheesy... :-)
beiing serious?!
>>>> Fu#@?*ing ... suitcase
AND believe or not - but there are not all things visible on this pic, which SHOULD get INTO this damned suitcase... !! YEP - the poster at the back says it all ;-)
- money exchange ... check
- passport / documents ... check
- checking all necessary stuff .... done ;-)
- pre-packing suitcase ... check
- pre-packing cabin lagguage ... double check
- coiffeur appointment ... check
- upload New Zealand map onto GPS navigation ... check
- loading all batteries ... in process

An effective solution is needed?!
So I lean back and don´t become a desperate traveler! It´s as easy as that - what´s still IN goes on vacation, rest has to stay at home. Life is not a ponyfarm, even pieces of luggage has to except this...!! :-DTuesday, December 20, 2011
food and drinks
Well, ... New Zealand has a very balanced climate, which guaranteed best quality in vegetables, fruits AND vine. Familar is Souvignon Blanc from Marlborough. And believe - THIS stuff is really AWESOME..!!
Beside great vine, Kiwis drink beer too. Following a short list of well-known small brewerys:
Hmm, u could mention, we just set over to the other side of globe for only getting drunk! NO! Hey! ... but, I mean... Do or do not, there is no try .. well, i guess ...maybe there is "a" try :-)
What´s about meal?
In general New Zealand is a classical barbecue land. But beside meat of cows, sheeps and red deer, veggies were satisfied, too. In the area of Kerikeri beaches u can get a lot of citrus fruits. Close to Tauranga u will find a lot of Avocados and Kiwis and at Hawke´s Bay apples and pipfruits in general. At Cromwell u can buy great dried fruit. And in the South (Nelson, Marlborough) are many vegetable farmers.
Man... I have to get rid off the rash thoughts - by Marlborough are no cigarettes meant! I have to think about vine. Okeeeeeey, but THIS is just another pleasure of addiction, isn't it?!? ;-)

- Founders Brewery (Nelson)
- Hallertau (Auckland - we are gonna join :-p)
- Moa Beer (Marlborogh)
- Renaissance Brewing Co (Blenheim)
- Three Boys Brewery (Christchurch)

Flora who?
Btw, this is a short update for for those who want to know more about my lovely travelmate Flora. Feel free and have a look at Flora´s blog
facts and news
For a really perfect preparation you should be well informed about news and facts of the country you´re going to join. Normally first touch to New Zealand are all these pretty pictures of nationalparks and the unbelievable nature. BUT this is not enough - you have to understand and feel-in into people living there, all do´s and don´ts - cause we stay for more than a few days, and we are gonna interacting with the locals. Hell, this will no "all-inclusive club vacation" ... this will be pure adventure at all!! ;-) So I read a lot of different stuff about New Zealand. I really tried to get an overview about history, basics, culture, lifestyle, food,..and so on.
some facts...
Credo by Kiwis:
"Beneath down under", you might be faced with the slogan ... "number-eight wire" ... and u have the foggiest, and think WTF?!? Well, this is the simple description of their national myth, that everything can be handled and fixed by a wire size number 8 :-)
OK, knowing facts on the one hand you become more ore less sensitive to news and everday occurrences, too. Latest news?
some facts...
- New Zealand one of the last major landmasses settled by humans
- capital (Wellington) is not the largest city (Auckland)
- National language is English and Maori
- Area 268,021km2 by 4,414400 habitants
- Calling Code is 0064
- Driving on the left side
- currency is New Zealand Dollar (NZD)
- 1st land of the world with female suffrage (18th September 1893)
- National sport is Rugby
- ... and so many ohter things, which will blow this list of bullets :-)

packing list preview
hmmm... I have googled for a detailled packing list. But the result of my search was more or less needless. So I have finished (so far!) my own packing list and post a short preview for those people, who stumble across this blog-site with same needs ;-) .
First of all, you should focus, which attractions you actually participate in. This is a good reason to split the list into groups. Nevertheless, during a long flight you should keep your focus to organize your cabin lagguage. Helpful will be an blindfold and a neck pillow to rest (maybe sleep) ... even give it a try in a healthy position ;-)
In case you have a travel mate you already know very well, you can apart all the needed stuff of your vanity bags (toothpaste for example). So the weight, of the single lagguage decrease.
Less weight, more space - it will be easier to carry home all souvenirs :-)
c´mon - I is there a big smile on your face?

packing list
"IN" or "OUT" - a really good question u have to ask yourself by creating the packing list.
Well - there are a lot of items u can group in "really necessary, less necessary, unnecessary but nice to have" :-) Hmmm... at least I´ve got the unpleasant feeling, ALL things are "veeery veeeery" important concerning to different circumstances which may appear. Could appear? Probably ..äähm.. may could appear?! :-D
Shortly popping up the valid question: "How much does excess luggage cost?!" BUT - already ON the way TO New Zealand EXCESS BAGGAGE?! WTF! How fucking crazy!! aaahahaha.... I expected this unavoidable situation on the way BACK HOME!
For sure i have to rearrange the packing list, twice ..hmmm... actually again .. and again ... and again... TILL?! ... going nuts! ;-)

attractions
Cause friends mentioned "What the hell, your´re gonna do there? It´s an fucking island, it´s green and there are just sheeps...?!"
well...
Yes there are a lot of sheeps 10 to 1. That means, 10 sheeps ahead one person. And now a "Rindvieh" named Manuel from Austria set over to explore the landscape of New Zealand AND participate in some crazy and unforgeteable attractions.
... a few attractions Flora and me join in:
- cave rafting
- dolphin swim (in the wild!)
- glacier walk
- glenorchy ride
- and many more (psst ;-) ... Mum´s the word! )
By the way - Flora is almost the first female, who managed successfully to pack me on the back of an horse :-)
But i think to lead 1 PS will be much more difficult for me, than to ride my 106PS motorbike. I have the unpleasant feeling, the horse will follow its own way :-D
Anyway -we adept a lot of fun, excitement, and action ... i guess, we almost loose ourselves in all these experiences :-)
la tour ;-)
there it is - the result of the booking madness of the last few weeks. :-)
Now, I´m going to print and arrange all booking confirmations. AND then - off we go. Counting final days ;-)
